Warm Audio WA-47

I reviewed the Warm Audio’s take on the Neumann ’47. The WA-47 represents a multi-pattern, large-diaphragm, transformer-balanced, tube condenser microphone. Its primary aim is to reproduce the sonic characteristics of the revered U47 microphones catering to musicians, recording professionals, and vocalists across project studios and commercial recording environments.

Much like Warm Audio’s faithful reproductions of the iconic Neumann U87 and AKG C414 microphones, the WA-47 places a strong emphasis on maintaining exceptional quality. Beyond its aptitude for vocal recording, this microphone shines when capturing an array of instruments, encompassing drums, guitars, pianos, strings, woodwinds, brass, and a broad spectrum of sonic sources.

Back in the 1960s, the classic ’47 microphone was extensively employed as a vocal mic in studios worldwide. Presently, it is celebrated as one of the most esteemed microphones ever crafted. Nonetheless, its current rarity and exorbitant price tag make it unattainable for many. For those in search of that same iconic tonal character and impressive performance (to hear it in action click here) without breaking the bank, the WA-47 stands out as a compelling choice.

The WA-47 Microphone consistently delivers exceptional performance. I really enjoy using it daily and the artist that come through my studio love the sound. Created with meticulous attention to detail, it boasts top-tier components and premium capacitors. Its production involves a strict manufacturing process that ensures top notch and consistently high standards of quality. Therefore, it offers a vintage and warm sound reminiscent of the classic U47 that’s been extremely hard to mimic up until now.

It’s a high-quality microphone that won’t break the bank and it’s pretty damn durable in my experience with it. Warm Audio’s design combines premium components with affordability. I purchased mines for $799. The WA-47 provides similar sonics as the classic ’47 microphone but at a more budget-friendly price point. This makes it possible to achieve a vintage, warm sound without a substantial financial investment.

It delivers remarkable flexibility. The WA-47 takes pride in offering nine distinct polar patterns, including figure-eight, omni-directional, and cardioid options. This diversity in patterns opens up a world of possibilities for experimenting with different recording styles. While the cardioid pattern suits most common recording needs, the omni-directional pattern excels at capturing a rooms natural reverb. These versatile patterns make the WA-47 an adaptable microphone suitable for a wide range of recording applications.

The WA-47 Drawbacks:

Now don’t go looking for an exact replica of the classic ’47 microphones. Some of the components in the WA-47 are different from the ones that are in the classic ’47 due to the shortage of certain vintage parts. This tube’s scarcity is one reason why classic ’47 mics are highly sought after. While the WA-47 shares similar tonal qualities and many components with its classic counterpart, these variations in construction set the two microphones apart, not just physically but also in terms of overall sound quality.

Final Thoughts on the WA-47:

With its exceptional versatility, use of high-quality audio components, and top notch performance, the WA-47 microphone appeals to both novice and professional music producers. I’ve ran it through my Mpc Live more than several times running line level on the inputs. For vocalists, and music lovers looking for a vintage sound at a good price it’s really a no brainer. Now, while it doesn’t replicate a $15,000 vintage Neumann U47, the Warm Audio WA-47 tube condenser microphone offers a rich, warm tone with remarkable flexibility and represents a great investment.”
